Ms. Shanevalene Garrett, or Nevie as she is called, is one of the seven families building their homes this spring with Habitat. She grew up in Talladega County, in a single parent home filled with lots of love. Today, she continues to be strongly connected to her family and lives with her mother, a younger sister who is 11 and a 26 – year old sister who has disabilities that requires round the clock care by their mother. This leaves Nevie as the primary income earner. Currently the family of four is living in an apartment complex in a bad neighborhood and their unit isn’t handicapped accessible for her sister.
Nevie has worked for the past three years as a case worker for Priority Veterans, a local non-profit who assist Alabama veterans. Owning her own home means that Nevie can rest easy knowing that while she is away at work her family is in a safe place. And that peace of mind is a true blessing. Nevie looks forward to having a yard for her youngest sister to play in and a neighborhood to be involved with. Ms. Garrett wants to make sure that her sisters have the same kind of loving home surrounded by family to grow up in that she did. Habitat is excited to partner with the Garrett family to make their dream of homeownership a reality.
Help us build for Nevie and her family with a donation to her home building efforts. Your tax deductible donation will help Nevie and other families in need of housing have an opportunity to have a safe and decent home. Click here to donate.
